The Tragedy of the Bunnies Game is a simple
game about an important social dilemma that has worried generations
of thinkers, from philosophers to biologists.
Valuable resources to which many people have access
– resources like oceans, forests, and elephants –
are commonly called "common pool" resources. Because
overuse of common pool resources can destroy the resource, people
have a long-term incentive to use the resource in moderation.
However, people also have short-term incentive to exploit the
resource as much as possible. When lots of people scramble to
"get while the getting is good," the results can be
tragic.
